Small businesses in Oxford County are being told to be vigilant when it comes to security after a recent rash of break-ins targeting ATMs.
Oxford OPP issued the reminder after responding to break and enters at multiple locations, including one at a variety store in Ingersoll late last week. In that case, two men were captured on video surveillance trying to make off with the Samnah Crescent store's ATM and lottery tickets.
According to police, stolen vehicles are being utilized in ATM thefts and attempted thefts. Thieves have been known to use the stolen vehicles to get into the businesses by crashing through the front doors.
To reduce the chance of a break-in or vehicle theft, police are telling business owners and local residents they should ask themselves the following security questions:
· Do you lock your vehicle doors when unattended?
· Did you pocket your keys?
· Do you have an alarm on your home or business?
· Do you have video surveillance at your home or business?
· Does your business have a barrier in front of the glass door and windows?
Police also advise residents to report any suspicious vehicles or people as soon as possible so officers can investigate.
Those interested can also contact their local OPP detachment to have a safeguard assessment done through the OPP SafeGuard Ontario Property Security Program, a community-based crime prevention program.
