Provincial police in Norfolk County are searching for the driver of a vehicle that took off after fatally hitting a pedestrian early Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews were called to the hit-and-run on Indian Line near Concession 2 in Townsend around 4:50 a.m.
The pedestrian was taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The name of that individual is not being released until family are notified.
OPP believe the vehicle involved in the collision was a mid-sized white coloured 2018 to 2022 Volkswagen Atlas SUV. It will have extensive front-end damage and was last seen heading eastbound on Indian Line towards Hagersville, police said.
"Automotive repair facilities, scrap yards or local repair outlets and tow truck operators are being encouraged to contact authorities if they have dealt with a vehicle matching the above description," a statement from the OPP read.
Indian Line between Mohawk Road and Villa Nova Road was closed for nearly nine hours while the OPP traffic incident management and enforcement team investigated. The road was reopened shortly before 2 p.m.
Police are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious while travelling in the area between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Residents and businesses nearby are also being urged to check their security surveillance cameras to see if they captured the vehicle or pedestrian involved.
