Grand Theatre calls out racist behaviour toward performer

The Grand Theatre is calling on Londoners to "do better" after one of its actors was subjected to not one, but two racist incidents over the weekend.

In a statement posted to Twitter Sunday afternoon, the downtown theatre said a cast member from its production of Grand Ghosts experienced two separate acts of racism while in the city.

"One of these acts of racism was perpetrated (off-site) by patrons who attended [Saturday's] performances,” the theatre said. "The Grand Theatre is profoundly disappointed that a guest artist was targeted in this way."

While the theatre did not get into the specifics of the alleged incidents, it did state that it would not tolerate "racist behaviours" in the community and amongst its patrons.

"We are working with the artist to support and uplift them through this, and we call on our community to do better, to call out racism in all its forms, and to be a more inclusive and welcoming place for all," the theatre said.

London News Today reached out to the Grand for additional comment. However after consulting with the artist at the centre of the incident, the Grand has said it will not be commenting further.

The theatre's post has been retweeted dozens of times and has received multiple comments from people condemning the racist acts and offering support to the artist who was targeted.

Grand Ghosts had its world premiere at the theatre on Friday. The play, written by Canadian Trina Davies and directed by Jillian Keiley, tells the story of Grand founder Ambrose Small who on December 2, 1919 sold the theatre for a 'record sum'. He disappeared the same day. What happened to him is a mystery that remains unsolved, but many speculate his ghost haunts the theatre to this day. The production runs until November 5.
