Keeping kids out of the emergency room

The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) wants to keep kids out of the hospital this summer and is offering tips to parents and caregivers to help avoid the emergency room.

"The [Emergency Department] ED is currently experiencing high volumes, which is causing longer than normal wait times,” Director of Paediatric Emergency Care at LHSC, Dr. Rod Lim said. "With summer vacation here, and kids being outside and more active, we recognize there is potential for increased injury. As much as possible, we want everyone to have a safe summer and avoid any unwanted trips to the ED."

LHSC said that the top five reasons for emergency visits to the Children's Hospital include:

• Injuries to the head

• General infection concerns

• Acute upper respiratory infections

• Injuries to the elbow/forearm

• Digestive/Abdomen

Dr. Lim suggests that making sure kids wear helmets when riding bikes, scooters, or skateboards is a top way to save little ones from head injuries.

"Personal flotation devices are a lifesaver for children when they are in and around water," He added.

His final piece of advice is to "stay hydrated this summer, especially during really hot days."

If there is a medical emergency LHSC does remain available 24 hours a day.
