Homes evacuated after crash causes gas leak in southeast London

Several homes in southeast London had to be temporarily evacuated on Monday after a vehicle crashed into a house causing a gas leak.

The vehicle struck the home on the quiet residential street of Vermont Avenue north of Commissioners Road East shortly after 9 a.m. A natural gas meter was damaged in the crash and began leaking.

Out of an abundance of caution, houses in the area were evacuated and students and staff at nearby schools C.C. Carrothers Public School and St. Sebastian Catholic Elementary School were told to stay inside by emergency crews.

There is no word on injuries.

London firefighters, police, and Enbridge crews were on scene for sometime. Residents have since been allowed to return to their homes and the shelter-in-place order at the schools has been lifted.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
