UPDATE: $100K downtown apartment fire deemed suspicious

A fire that caused substantial damage to a residential highrise in downtown London Tuesday afternoon has been deemed suspicious.

Firefighters were called to 186 King Street around 2 p.m. after a fire broke out inside a fifth floor unit. Crews were able to extinguish the blaze relatively quickly and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials remained on scene afterwards to ventilate the floors from above where the fire started.

Damage is estimated at approximately $100,000. The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the cause.

On Wednesday morning, London police confirmed the cause of the fire is suspicious.

"The fire was deemed to be suspicious in nature and the investigation was assigned to members of the London Police Service Street Crime Unit," police said.
