Spring's arrival means more daylight, budding leaves on trees, and an influx of kittens.
Looking toward that feline birthing boom, the Humane Society London and Middlesex (HSLM) is asking the public for help re-stocking its shelves.
The animal shelter anticipates hundreds of new kittens will be dropped off at its Clarke Road facility over the coming months. That will add to an already high monthly food bill. According to the humane society it pays roughly $6,360 a month to feed the approximately 200 cats and kittens it has at the shelter.
"Many shelter pets are on veterinary prescribed or specialty diets," the humane society said in a statement. "Monetary donations provide HSLM with the ability to work with local retail partners to source the right products to meet each pet’s diet requirements."
Shelter animals are fed one of only three brands of pet food - Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Diet & Purina One/Pro Plan. The routine diet provides a consistency that reduces vet visits for upset stomachs and improves the animal's overall health as they prepare to transition to their new home, the humane society said.
Pet food donations can be purchased through the HSLM Amazon.ca wish list or the Ren’s Pets gift registry. They can also be dropped off in-person at the shelter Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Financial donations are accepted through the humane society's website www.hslm.ca.
