Health Unit saving Pfizer doses for young people

If you are over the age of 29 and getting a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine, it will be a Moderna dose.

The Middlesex London Health Unit announced Thursday that, due to limited supply, it is prioritizing people aged 12 to 29 for doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Cominarty vaccine. The health unit says the move is in accordance with recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.

"It is important to note that this strategy does not affect the Pfizer vaccine doses provided to children between the ages of five and 11," the health unit said.

Residents aged 30 and older will be given the Moderna Spikevax vaccine for their second or booster doses, regardless of which brand they received previously.

“We want to ensure that everyone can get the protection they need, whether that’s a booster dose, a second dose or even a first dose. That means using the vaccine we have now to build a stronger level of protection in the community,” Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Alex Summers said. “It’s worth reminding everyone that Pfizer and Moderna are essentially the same vaccine with different packaging; both offer good protection, regardless of which you’ve received previously.”

All Ontarians 18 and older are eligible for a third dose of vaccine, provided it has been three months since their second dose.
