75 new COVID-19 cases reported in London, Middlesex

There was a big jump in the number of COVID-19 cases in the London area over the weekend.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 75 new cases on Monday. The health unit said there were 58 new cases reported Sunday and 43 new cases reported Saturday. No deaths were recorded over the weekend.

There have now been 15,418 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. The number of active cases has climbed back above 400. There are currently 445 active cases in London and Middlesex County. One month ago, that figure was 95.

Fortunately, hospitlizations have not increased at the same rate. According to the London Health Sciences Centre, it is currently caring for 13 patients with COVID-19. That's up from nine a month ago. The hospital says five or fewer of its COVID-19 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, 74 new cases were reported by Southwestern Public Health. That report covers the entire weekend, as the health unit does not report new case figures on weekends. One death was also reported. There are currently 225 active cases in the two counties.

Ontario reported 1,536 new cases and one death on Monday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said there are 253 people in hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 161 are in intensive care. The majority of those hospitalized are not vaccinated, she said.
