Come the new year, Michael Schulthess will take over as the City of London's new city clerk.
Schulthess was appointed to the position following an "extensive recruitment process" that saw people apply from municipalities across Canada, city officials said in a release issued late Tuesday night. He replaces current City Clerk Cathy Saunders, who is slated to retire from the role she has held since 2009 on January 7.
“On behalf of all of council, I want to thank Cathy for the knowledge and expertise she has demonstrated throughout the time she has served in this role. I have greatly appreciated her wisdom and guidance, and wish her well in her retirement,” Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement. “I also want to congratulate Michael on this appointment and express our confidence in his ability to provide leadership and to support council as he steps into this new role.”
Schulthess, a lawyer by profession, has been one of London's two deputy city clerks since 2019. He has worked for the City of London since 2008, serving in a variety of roles including manager of courts administration and manager of legislative services. He also worked in the City Solicitor’s Office for four years.
Schulthess' appointment takes effect on January 8.
