Tanker rollover keeps section of Highway 402 closed overnight

The hazmat team with the London Fire Department acted quickly to contain a fuel leak after a tanker truck rolled over on Highway 402, west of London on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to the westbound lanes of the highway at the Colonel Talbot Road exit at around 2 p.m. after the tractor trailer rolled over into the ditch.

"So far the investigation has determined that a transport truck was travelling eastbound on Highway 402 when it crossed over into the westbound lanes," said OPP Acting Sgt. Ed Sanchuk.

Sanchuk added that the truck contained roughly 40,000 litres of gasoline before it crashed, some of that fuel spilled onto the road. Firefighters were able to plug the leaks upon arrival.

Paramedics were called to the scene, however injuries appeared to be minor. Sanchuk said the driver of the truck was able to get out of the vehicle on his own and walk over to the medics. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

The rollover kept the westbound lanes and one eastbound lane at Colonel Talbot closed for roughly 17 hours. All lanes were reopened just after 7 a.m. on Thursday.
