Item stolen from vehicle is radioactive: police

It may have looked like any other tool in a protective case, but police say the item stolen from a vehicle in Old East Village last week is radioactive.

Thieves snatched the “Troxler 3430” moisture density gauge, along with other items, from a vehicle parked on Dundas Street near Adelaide Street on October 19. One week later, London police were informed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission that the device contains radioactive material.

According to the commission, the unshielded radioactive material is considered to be low-risk, but could still cause temporary injury to anyone who handles it or is close to it for several weeks.

The device is yellow with a keypad and what looks like a long silver handling sticking out from the top. It is typically stored in a large yellow rectangular box with two latches.

Police are asking anyone who has information about this theft or the whereabouts of the density gauge to call them at 519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
