CFIA warns consumers of mushrooms contaminated with Listeria

If you bought a container of sliced white mushrooms from Metro recently, they've been recalled.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said they could be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

They were packaged by Carleton Mushroom for Metro and distributed at stores in Ontario and Quebec.

The best before date is October 25 and was sold in 227g blue containers.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store for a refund.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell like it has turned, but it can still make you sick.

Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle ache, severe headache and neck stiffness. In the most severe cases, the illness can be fatal.

Pregnant women, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system are at particular risk. It can cause premature delivery for expectant mothers or stillbirth.

So far, no illness has been reported in Canada as a result of the recalled product.
