Officer assaulted, man tasered after police stop suspected drunk driver

A driver alleged to have had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system was tasered after an Aylmer police officer was assaulted.

Police began receiving calls about a suspected impaired driver in the town just before 10 p.m. on Sunday. Officers found a vehicle matching the description and pulled it over on Sydenham Street.

As officers were trying to arrest the man, he allegedly began resisting.

"When police attempted to handcuff the male a fight broke out resulting in an officer deploying his conducted energy weapon," Aylmer police said.

The man was taken to the police station where his blood alcohol concentration registered at 3.5 times the legal limit of 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

A 49-year-old Aylmer man has been charged with impaired driving in excess of 80 mgs and assaulting a peace officer. His driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded.
