Londoner Maggie Mac Neil's banner year is continuing with even more accolades bestowed upon the 21-year-old swimmer.
The three-time Olympic medallist has been named the Best Female Athlete of Tokyo 2020 by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC). The awards were handed out Sunday in Greece.
Mac Neil tweeted that she was "so honoured" to have received the award and thanked Team Canada, Swimming Canada, and the ANOC for the opportunity.
Mac Neil claimed Canada's first gold medal of the 2020 Tokyo Games in July. She swam 55.59-seconds to take first place in the 100-metre butterfly. It was the third-fastest time ever recorded in the sport at the Olympics. She also took two other medals at the games - silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay and bronze in the 4x100m medley relay.
The Tokyo games marked Mac Neil's first time competing at the Olympics.
The ANOC Awards have been handed out after every Olympics since 2014. They recognize outstanding athletic achievements from the games.
The award for Best Male Athlete of Tokyo 2020 went to marathon gold medallist Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya.
✨ I had such an amazing time exploring Greece ? and will definitely be back soon!
