The number of new COVID-19 cases recorded in the London region in a single day was back below ten on Monday, the first single digit increase in a week.
The Middlesex London Health Unit reported seven new infections on Monday, down from 19 on Sunday and 11 on Saturday. The region saw its last single digit case increase last Monday when just two new infections were logged. There have only been five days this month in which daily case numbers have been under ten.
The area’s total case count stands at 14,409 since the pandemic began.
There has not been an additional COVID-19 related death locally since last Thursday, when a man in his 70s succumbed to the virus. The death toll remains at 245.
Resolved cases in the city and county are up by 19 to 14,048. Currently, there are 116 active cases in the region, down 11 since the previous day.
There are COVID-19 outbreaks at four local schools - Our Lady of the Pillar Academy in Strathroy and Clara Brenton Public, Covenant Christian School, and St. Nicholas Senior Catholic in London. The Thames Valley District School Board has 43 active cases at 32 schools, while the London District Catholic School Board has three active cases at three of its schools. Close contacts of the infected individuals have been notified and are isolating accordingly.
The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is reporting seven patients with COVID-19 in its care, up one from Friday. Five or fewer of those patients are listed in intensive care and five or fewer are at Children’s Hospital. The LHSC currently has five or fewer staffers who have tested positive for the virus.
Of the 650 people in the London region who have contracted the virus over the past six weeks, 62.8 per cent were not vaccinated, 5.1 per cent were partially vaccinated, 3.1 per cent had received the vaccine but it had not yet taken effect, and 29.1 per cent were fully vaccinated. The unvaccinated or partially vaccinated account for 78.5 percent of local hospitalizations.
The number of new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Elgin and Oxford counties was 35 on Monday. That number includes infections identified both Saturday and Sunday, as Southwestern Public Health does not update its COVID-19 dashboard on weekends. The latest cases bring the two counties total case count to 4,604. There were no additional deaths recorded, leaving the death toll unchanged at 90. The health unit said the total number of resolved cases in the area is 4,427, leaving 87 known active cases. As of Sunday, 86.2 per cent of all people in the two counties 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, 82.5 per cent have been given both shots.
Provincially, the daily case tally fell below 350.
Public health officials reported 326 new infections on Monday. That is down from 370 on Sunday, and 373 on Saturday.
Of the 373 cases recorded over the past 24 hours, 183 were reportedly among unvaccinated people, seven involved partially vaccinated people, and 95 were fully vaccinated people. There were 41 COVID-positive individuals whose vaccination status was not known.
Regions with the most new cases Monday were Toronto with 39, Peel Region with 33, and York Region with 31.
The province’s total case count since the start of the pandemic now sits at 597,841.
No additional COVID-19 related deaths were reported over the past 24 hours, leaving the death toll at 9,846.
At hospitals in Ontario, there are 163 patients with COVID-19, down 25 from Sunday. The total number of patients in the intensive care unit is up by one to 138 and the number of patients on ventilators is up by two to 109.
The number of resolved cases rose by 369 to 584,780. There are currently 3,215 known active cases of the virus in Ontario.
The province has administered just over 22.3 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, as of Sunday night. Nearly 88 per cent of Ontarians 12 and older have received one dose of the vaccine, while 83.9 per cent have been given their second dose to be considered fully inoculated.
