Tenants of a highrise building near Old East Village where a child died after falling from a balcony over the weekend have been told not to use their balconies until further notice.
City of London building officials inspected the apartment building at 400 Lyle Street at the request of London police on Tuesday. The inspection led to the balconies being deemed unsafe.
"The inspection identified balcony guardrails with openings greater than 100 millimetres. As a result, an ‘Unsafe Building – Order to Make Safe’ has been issued," the city said in a statement.
As part of the order, residents have been told not to use their balconies until the building owner takes the necessary steps to rectify the unsafe condition.
"We know this is a difficult time for the residents in this building, and for the friends and family of the toddler who succumbed to injuries this weekend. Our thoughts are with them," the city said.
Shortly after noon, on October 2, a 22-month-old girl, identified as Inayah through an online campaign, fell from an upper unit balcony at 400 Lyle Street. She was rushed to hospital where she later died from her injuries. A GoFundMe campaign launched on Monday had raised nearly $20,000 by Wednesday morning for the toddler's parents. The money collected will be used to cover funeral, re-accommodation, and travel costs.
The highrise on 400 Lyle Street, along with the adjacent buildings on 700 King Street, are a part of Medallion Corporation's Revo development, a private, Toronto-based real estate development and property management company.
London News Today reached out to Medallion Corporation for further comment but has not received a reply at the time this article was published.
Police along with the Office of the Chief Coroner continue to investigate the incident.
