Health officials in London-Middlesex are extending the heat warning currently in effect by an extra day, as hot and humid temperatures show no signs of letting up just yet.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) said the two-day heat warning that was issued on Monday, will continue until at least Friday morning. Initially, the alert was expected to expire Thursday morning.
Most areas in southwestern Ontario have been under a blanket of steamy air since last weekend. In London, temperatures have reached upwards of 30 C with humidex values making things feel more like 40 C. The heat is expected to peak on Thursday with a daytime high of 31 C, feeling more like 42 C with mainly sunny skies.
With that in mind, David Pavletic, the health unit's manager of environmental health, said it's important to consider some risks associated with the scorching heat.
"Given the cumulative effect of prolonged high temperatures, humidity and intense sunshine, it is important to plan ahead and take frequent breaks if you’ll be spending any time outdoors [Thursday]," Pavletic said.
While some people take relish in the hot summer days, Pavletic added the heat can take a serious toll on others.
"It will also be a good idea to check on friends and family, especially those who are elderly, to make sure they are finding ways to stay cool."
The health unit continues to remind the public to drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty and if possible, stay indoors or find shaded areas outdoors to help prevent yourself from suffering from a heat-related illness.
Londoners will have to wait until Friday and the weekend to get a slight reprieve from the heat when temperatures are expected to sit around 27 C with rain in the forecast.
More information on health risks caused by extreme heat can be found on the health unit's website.
