The unemployment rate in the London and St. Thomas area is back in single digits.
Figures released Friday by Statistics Canada show the jobless rate in the London Census Metropolitan Area, which includes London, St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities, was 9.1 per cent in July, down from the 11 month high of 10 per cent in June.
Approximately 700 jobs were created in the area last month, and the number of people claiming employment insurance benefits fell by 3,200. There was a decline, from 66.4 per cent to 65.9 per cent, in the labour participation rate, which gauges the percentage of the working age population that is either working or actively looking for work.
The national unemployment rate fell to 7.5 per cent in July, from June's 7.8 per cent. In Ontario, the rate was 8.6 per cent in July, down from 8.9 per cent in June.
