Holder "would not be surprised" if feds bring in vaccine passports

London's Mayor believes that vaccine passports may be coming to Ontario - and the rest of Canada -  soon.

On the same day that Quebec Premier Francois Legault announced that province would soon have vaccination requirements for those who want to attend public places like restaurants and gyms, Ed Holder was asked about a similar possibility in Ontario.

"We've heard the federal government indicate it will be a function of provincial decision, I would not be surprised if at some point the federal government makes that decision," Holder said at the Middlesex-London Health Unit Media briefing. "I think it's practical, particularly as it relates to international travel and the requirement for double vaccinations to be in place."

Holder also said a federal plan would "avoid issues of potential fraud and ensure the appropriate movement of people at airports and border crossings."

"I can imagine a federal determination, and when that's done I think that all provinces across the country will quickly comply," Holder added.

In Quebec, Legault said rising case numbers have prompted that province's decision to implement vaccination passports.

Quebec announced 305 cases on Wednesday - the first time that province had a daily count above 300 since May. There were 213 cases confirmed in Ontario.

Details on the Quebec passports are yet to be announced.
