Charges laid against knife-wielding suspect shot by police

A 40-year-old London man who suffered non-life threatening injuries after being shot by police earlier this week is now facing four charges in relation to the downtown incident.

It was around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday when police were called about a man armed with knives at an apartment on Dufferin Avenue just east of Waterloo Street.

The man is alleged to have charged at officers with knives in both of his hands.

Two officers attempted to use less lethal force by firing tasers to try to stop the man, but were not successful. A third officer then fired his gun at the man, who suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.

On Friday, London police announced the man, whose name was not released, has now been charged with three counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and one count of possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.

The SIU, the independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police resulting in death or serious injury, continues to probe the shooting. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU asks anyone with information to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Video evidence can also be uploaded to the SIU website.
