Lake Erie fishing trip ends in tragedy

Provincial police in Elgin County say an evening of fishing on Lake Erie came to a tragic end when a London man fell from the boat and later died.

According to police, they were alerted around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday about a possible drowning in Lake Erie between Port Bruce and Port Burwell.

It was learned that a man fell into the water while fishing with friends. He was pulled from the lake and rushed to land. Despite life saving efforts by friends and paramedics, the man died in hospital.

He has been identified as 49-year-old Ryan Leppard-Groenewegen of London.

Police say foul play is not suspected.
