City seeking Londoners' opinion on e-scooters, large cargo e-bikes

London City Hall is gathering feedback from residents on how they feel e-scooters, and large cargo e-bikes could be used in the city.

City officials have launched two feedback surveys for business owners and dwellers to give opinions on if and how these transportation devices could be used within the municipality.

The opportunities come as part of the province's five-year pilot project allowing municipalities across Ontario to decide if e-scooters and cargo e-bikes will be allowed in their community.

Additionally, city hall is also collecting feedback on how a potential e-scooter share program could be integrated with London's future bike-share program, planned for 2022.

Allison Miller, London's Transportation Demand Management Coordinator, says they want to hear input or possible concerns from residents, as well as feedback from those with personal experience using them in other cities.

"E-scooters and large cargo e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular in cities across North America, and they offer another way for people to get around," Miller said.

Currently, London does not allow e-scooters on roads, bike lanes, sidewalks, or multi-use paths. They are powered by a motor and riders use them by standing on a platform. In Ontario, e-scooters must not travel faster than 24 kilometres per hour, though cities are permitted to lower speed limits. People aged 16 and over can drive them.

Large cargo e-bikes have a peddle assisted motor, along with a large platform or container used to carry passengers or items. E-bikes included in Ontario's pilot program weigh over 120 kilograms and have an electric motor between 500 and 1,000 watts.

Pedal-powered cargo bikes and small e-bikes, already permitted in London, are not part of the pilot.

A report and staff recommendation about e-scooters and large cargo e-bikes will be presented to city council later this summer.
