One man charged after standoff in East London

A standoff in east London ended with one man facing charges.

Police received a call about a man with a knife on Sackville Street near Hackett Street, just a few blocks north of Hamilton Road, around 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Police determined another man was threatened with the weapon and robbed before the suspect went back inside his home.

The suspect refused to come out when officers arrived on scene. Police negotiated with the man for several hours, the area was closed to traffic, and those who live in the neighbourhood were asked to stay inside their homes.

The standoff ended peacefully around 4 p.m. with the suspect surrendering to police.

Nobody was hurt during the incident.

A 59-year-old London man is charged with armed robbery and uttering threats. He was scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charges on Wednesday.
