Middlesex-London Health Unit surpasses half million vaccine milestone

It's a huge milestone in the local battle against COVID-19 - but health officials say the community still has more to do.

More than half a million vaccination doses have been administered in London and Middlesex County.

"We are at 509,954 delivered as of the end of day (Sunday)," said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Chris Mackie. "That's a truly tremendous task that really only could be done by all of the teams working together in the health care sector, as well as all the people who came out and gave their arms to us to vaccinate."

Over 100,000 of those doses have been administered since June 21st, so the pace is ramping up.

"Tremendous achievements, about 90% through the mass clinics and health unit partners, but I really want to stress the importance of the pharmacy campaigns as well," Mackie said.

The Health Unit says that 92% of those diagnosed with COVID-19 between June 18th and July 2nd were unvaccinated; 8% of cases reported were among people who had received one vaccination. There were no cases among those who had received two shots.  Those numbers do not include the 16 new confirmed cases over the last three days.

"It just stresses the importance of getting vaccinated, getting fully vaccinated," Mackie said. "It's no longer really an option, we absolutely need you, and you need, to rebook your second dose as soon as possible."

The delta variant, which is far more likely to spread to individuals with one vaccination than other variants, has arrived in the region, as the Health Unit has confirmed 20 cases locally. Mackie says the quicker you can get that second dose, the better off the community will be.

Appointments can be booked at covidvaccinelm.ca.

The Health Unit says the most recent vaccination statistics will be put on their website on Tuesday.
