Several track and field athletes from the southwestern Ontario region have been named to Canada's Olympic team.
Team Canada announced the list of 57 competitors on Saturday, which includes 33 women and 24 men.
Of the athletes selected to represent Canada, three are from the Windsor-Essex area, one is from London, one is from Delaware, and one is from Lucknow.
Windsor's Brandon McBride has been selected for the men's 800 metre. The 27-year-old participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2015 Pan Am Games. He was also a three-time gold medalist at the 2013 Canada Games, according to his biography posted to the Team Canada website.
Noelle Montcalm of Windsor has been selected for the women's 400 metre hurdles and 4x400 metre relay. The 33-year-old had previously competed at the 2016 Rio Games where she made her Olympic debut and finished in fourth place.
Dayna Pidhoresky of Tecumseh was chosen to compete in the women's marathon. The 34-year-old has finished several notable marathons in high rankings, with the most recent being in Ottawa in 2019 where she finished sixth and at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2017 where she finished seventh.
Damian Warner of London was chosen to compete in the men's decathlon. The 31-year-old won bronze in the event at the 2016 Rio Games.
Delaware's Alysha Newman was selected for the women's pole vault. The 27-year-old made her Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio. She later competed at the 2019 Lima Pan American Games.
Julie-Anne Staehli of Lucknow was selected for the women’s 5,000 metre.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was postponed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic but is scheduled to take place from July 23 until August 8. The Paralympic Games will be held from August 24 until September 5.
