Daily COVID-19 case counts in the London area remain low however, the region is reporting a third death in the span of a week.
On Saturday, the Middlesex-London Health Unit reported just two new cases of the virus and one death. A woman in her 80s who was not associated with any long-term care or retirement homes is the third person this week to succumb to the virus.
The local death toll now rests at 226. Earlier this week, the health unit reported two other deaths, one on Tuesday and another on Friday.
The region's total case count is now at 12,526. Meanwhile, there were nine more recoveries reported on Saturday, causing the number of known active cases to settle at 36. A total of 12,264 cases have been resolved.
The number of cases involving variants of concern in the area has gone up to 3,448. Two more cases of the highly transmissible B.1.617 (Delta) variant, originally found in India were reported in the London area for a total of 10 cases locally, along with one new case of the P.1 (Gamma) variant from Brazil for a total of 88.
Only one institutional outbreak remains active on the 8TU transplant unit at University Hospital.
Across Ontario, provincial health officials reported 346 new cases on Saturday and 13 new deaths bringing the province's virus-related death toll to 9,114. There have now been 543,917 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario.
The province also broke a record for the number of vaccines given in one day. Ontario administered 256,260 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday. A total of 13,824,469 vaccines have been put into the arms of Ontarians since the rollout program began.
