Public health units in London-Middlesex, Elgin, and Oxford Counties are extending second-dose re-bookings to those who received their first COVID-19 shot before May 9.
With a surplus of Moderna mRNA vaccines on the way, those eligible will be able to reschedule an appointment starting Wednesday at 8 a.m.
Over 30,000 Moderna vaccines will be distributed to immunization clinics in the region starting early next week, on top of the regular amount of Pfizer vaccines scheduled to be delivered.
Adults who've received the first dose of any type of vaccine can receive an mRNA vaccine as their second dose, as endorsed by Health Canada and the National Advisory Council on Immunization. Currently, the Moderna vaccine is not approved for use in youth aged 12-17.
Even though health officials have said a 12-week interval between second doses is better for long-term protection, getting a second dose as soon as possible is recommended to protect against the Delta variant. Health officials say it may soon be the dominant COVID-19 variant in Ontario.
Rescheduled appointments can be made starting June 16 either online at www.covidvaccinelm.ca or by calling 226-289-3560 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
