Norfolk County OPP make astonishing rescue on Lake Erie

Two jet-skiers were taken to hospital following an incident on Lake Erie near Turkey Point over the weekend.

According to Norfolk County provincial police, a concerned relative called emergency services after the pair failed to return to shore after departing on watercraft from a residence on Ordnance Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

At around 8:10 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment Marine Unit, along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton (JRCC), and the Canadian Coast Guard were called to search.

Over an hour into the investigation, members of the coast guard located both people floating in the water approximately two kilometres east of Pottahawk Island.

The pair were brought back and later transported to hospital to be treated for hypothermia. Officers say the use of life jackets helped save the lives of the two people.

"I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the JRCC, the Canadian Coast Guard and members of the Norfolk County OPP Marine Unit for their quick response," said Norfolk Detachment Commander, Inspector Rob Scott. "As a result, they were able to locate both individuals and bring them back safely to shore."

Police have not provided any other details into the incident.

Police remind the public to ensure they have all necessary safety equipment and a charged cell phone with them before venturing out on open waters.
