Vehicle clocked at 166 km/h on Veterans Memorial Parkway

Charges have been laid against a man after a vehicle was clocked doing more than double the speed limit on Veterans Memorial Parkway.

London police stopped the vehicle shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday near Tartan Drive where the posted speed limit is 80 km/h. Police allege the vehicle was travelling at 166 km/h prior to being stopped.

A 33-year-old man is charged with stunt driving. His vehicle has also been impounded and his licence suspended for seven days. A stunt driving conviction carries fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 and six months in jail.

Last month, the provincial government introduced new legislation to toughen the penalties for street racing and stunt driving. The proposed changes would see driver licence suspensions increased to 30 days from seven, and vehicle impoundments doubled to 14 days.
