Police officer assaulted while arresting trespassing suspect

Charges have been laid against a London man accused of property damage and assaulting a police officer.

London police were called about a man trespassing through several backyards on Van Street east of Rectory Street around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Approximately $1,300 worth of property was damaged at multiple locations in the area.

After getting a description of the man from witnesses, officers found a suspect nearby. He was arrested after a short foot chase.

An officer was assaulted during the arrest and was treated for minor injuries.

A 31-year-old London man is charged with assaulting a peace officer, and mischief under $5,000.

He is scheduled to appear in London court on July 21.
