Armed robbery suspect allegedly tried to ditch police in hospital

A London man is facing charges after an armed robbery turned into a fistfight at a north-end variety store.

A man armed with a knife walked into the convenience store at 1136 Adelaide Street North around 7 p.m. on Saturday and demanded money from the clerk. The store employee and the man then got into a physical altercation which ended with the man running from the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. He was then seen getting into into a cab near Adelaide and Kipps Lane.

The clerk suffered minor injuries and items inside the store were damaged in the scuffle.

Police were called and arrested a suspect in the area of York and Clarence streets as he got out of a taxi. The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries that police allege were sustained during the robbery.

While at the hospital the suspect attempted to get away from officers, but was quickly taken back into custody.

A 33-year-old London man is now charged with armed robbery, escaping lawful custody of a peace officer, and possession of proceeds of property not exceeding $5,000 obtained by crime.
