COVID-19 outbreaks declared at two Western University residences

The Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting COVID outbreaks at Western University’s Saugeen-Maitland Hall and Ontario Hall residence.

As of Friday evening, officials say a total of 11 cases have been reported between the two buildings. Seven at Saugeen Maitland Hall and four at Ontario Hall.

Chris Alleyne, Western's housing and ancillary services associate vice president is pleading with students to practice due diligence in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

"We know students are missing each other, and the milder weather makes us all want to spend time with our friends even more," said Alleyne. "But Ontario is in the third wave of the pandemic, and we can't let our guard down. We have a responsibility to continue to take care of ourselves, each other and our community."

All students living in the affected residences have been notified.

Those who have tested positive and others who are close contacts have been moved to a quarantine location. Floor lounges and study rooms in both buildings have also been closed, and on-site testing is being provided as an investigative measure.

Last fall, the university implemented health and safety measures in residences, including reducing capacity to about 70 per cent. Students are also restricted from bringing guests to their residence or visiting other residences.

Earlier this month, Essex Hall residence reported an outbreak as well, though there was no evidence that it had anything to do with large social gatherings.
