The London Fire Department is reminding pet owners to keep their furry friends away from area waterways this time of year after a dog became trapped in an icy pond over the weekend.
The pooch was out for a walk with his owner Sunday morning near Walkers Pond in the area of Wellington and Southdale roads when he began to chase something that caught his eye. The dog fell through the ice while in pursuit.
The dog's owner called emergency crews who quickly arrived on scene. Three members of the fire department's marine rescue team waded into the water with an inflatable raft. They were able to lift the dog out of the water and reunite him with his owner.
It is unclear how long the animal was in the water, but he was said to be in good condition.
"Use care with pets around waterways and ice. Be safe, keep your pets on a leash. #noiceissafeice," the fire department tweeted along with a video of the icy rescue.
