Alleged impaired driver had child in back seat

A St. Thomas man is accused of being behind the wheel of a vehicle with twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system and a child in the back seat.

Police were called after a person allegedly saw a man toss a beer can out the window of a parked vehicle downtown around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The person told police there was a child seated in the back of the car.

Officers stopped the vehicle a short distance away.

Breath samples from the driver indicated he had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system, police said.

A 32-year-old man is charged with impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol concentration 80 plus, and driving while prohibited.

The vehicle has been impounded for 45 days as this was a second offence, police said.
