Ontario Police College suspends classes amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Ontario Police College in Aylmer is grappling with a COVID-19 outbreak that so far has caused 18 people to fall ill.

The first positive case was identified on February 22, according to a statement on Thursday from Brent Ross with the Ministry of the Solicitor General. With advice from Southwestern Public Health, the school has suspended all classes to allow all staff and recruits to undergo testing.

"Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ontario Police College has implemented safety measures to protect recruits and staff," Ross said. "This includes mandatory screening, isolation as appropriate, on-site testing, and providing personal protective equipment. The health of our staff and recruits is the top priority, and we continue to work with local public health to protect their safety."

Southwestern recorded 15 new cases of COVID-19 across Elgin, St. Thomas and Oxford on Thursday, following zero cases the day before.
