Eight charged after police break up New Year's Eve party

Charges have been laid against eight people after London police broke up a New Year's Eve party in the north end.

Police were called to the home on Callingham Way near Sunningdale Road West around 1 a.m. on Friday. When officers arrived they found what they described as "a number of people" both inside and outside of the residence, none of whom were wearing face coverings.

A 20-year-old London man was charged with hosting an indoor gathering exceeding the number permitted and participating in an indoor gathering exceeding the number permitted under the Reopening Ontario Act.

Seven others, five men and two women, were also charged with participating in an indoor gathering exceeding the number permitted.

Ontario has been in lockdown since Boxing Day to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Under those restrictions, public events and social gatherings are prohibited except with members of the same household. Outdoor gatherings are capped at ten people.

Those convicted of violating the provincial emergency order could be fined up to $100,000 and face up to one year in jail.
