Flying high on the success of its first drive-in event, Airshow London has decided to bring the physically distant format back next year.
Officials behind the annual aviation extravaganza at the London International Airport announced on Wednesday they would keep the drive-in system for a second year. The 2021 Airshow London will be held over three days from August 27 to 29.
Dubbed "SkyDrive," the drive-in airshow held this past September was created to adhere to public health safety measures meant to limit the spread of COVID-19. The sold-out event saw more than 2,500 vehicles parked on the grounds, allowing patrons to watch the planes take to the sky. Each vehicle was assigned a 20 by 25-foot space with spectators allowed to be outside of their vehicle within that perimeter. The show was then broadcast over vehicle radios.
“After an amazing 2020 event, with incredible and extensive feedback from our fans to continue with the SkyDrive format, we look forward to hosting another drive-in air show in 2021,” said Jim Graham, chair of Airshow London. “We are excited to build on this innovative concept and provide our fans with an awesome show.”
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels Demonstration Team will headline the 2021 airshow, along with the Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Team. Other performers and aircraft will be announced leading up to the show.
"As an established premier air show in Canada, we look forward to our 2021 event, providing our fans with an unmatched experience," said Graham. "We can’t wait to host the United States Navy Blue Angels for their only Canadian appearance this season, representing the positive reputation Airshow London is creating within North America."
Spectators parked in their 20 by 25-foot spaces will be allowed to bring their own food and refreshments. There will also be roving food vendors and portable washrooms on the grounds.
Tickets for SkyDrive have to be purchased in advance and are on sale at www.airshowlondon.com.
