Inmate pronounced dead at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre

Officials confirmed that an inmate has died at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) last Wednesday evening.

According to a statement from the Ministry of the Solicitor General on Saturday, paramedics were called to EMDC on November 25, and an inmate was pronounced deceased. No further details regarding the cause of death have been provided while the investigations are ongoing.

"When a death involving an inmate occurs, it is the subject of multiple investigations. The Office of the Chief Coroner conducts a death investigation to determine cause and manner of death." the statement read. The ministry added that it will begin a mandatory internal investigation to determine whether all policies and procedures were followed.

If the cause of death results from anything other than natural causes, an inquest will be called. London police may also investigate the matter to determine if the death was the result of any criminal activity.
