Nearly 20 new COVID-19 cases reported in London-Middlesex

After a single-digit increase to start the week, London and Middlesex County have returned to double-digit daily COVID-19 cases.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 18 new infections on Tuesday. That is up from nine on Monday and matches the 18 recorded on Sunday. So far this month, daily COVID-19 cases in the region have climbed above ten on all but seven days.

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic stands at 1,495.

An outbreak on the fourth floor medicine unit at University Hospital was expanded to include all medical floors on Tuesday. There is also an outbreak on the 2 Perth unit at Parkwood Institute. The London Health Sciences Centre currently has 23 patients in its care with COVID-19 and 19 infected staff members.

The Thames Valley District School Board confirmed two more cases at two of its schools on Monday night. The latest cases are at Laurie Hawkins Public School in Ingersoll and Lord Dorchester Secondary School in Dorchester.

Fourteen more people in the area have recovered from the virus to bring the total number of resolved cases to 1,298. Currently, there are 133 active cases in the region.

There were no additional COVID-19 related deaths in the city or county on Tuesday, leaving the death toll at 64.

Elgin and Oxford have now reported a total of 500 cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic. The two counties hit the 500 mark on Tuesday when four new infections were confirmed. The number of resolved cases rose to 446, as 17 more recoveries were recorded over the past 24 hours. The death toll remains unchanged since July with five deaths linked to COVID-19. There are currently 49 active cases in the region, Southwestern Public Health said.

A technical error has resulted in an underestimated and an overestimated COVID-19 case count over the past two days, according to the province's health minister.

Ontario reported 1,009 new cases on Tuesday, after Monday's record 1,589 new infections.

"Due to a technical issue, case numbers were overestimated [Monday] and underestimated [Tuesday]," Christine Elliott tweeted.

Typically, the province's daily report includes cases registered by 12 p.m. But cases reported up until 8 p.m. on Sunday were included in Monday's report.

Toronto led the way for the most new cases on Tuesday with 497. The city was followed by Peel with 175 and York Region with 118.

Ontario’s total number of cases now stands at 106,510.

Fourteen more people died from the virus across the province, increasing the death toll to 3,519. Ten of the 14 deaths reported Tuesday were linked to long-term care homes.

Public health officials said 1,082 more people recovered from the virus, bringing the resolved case total to 90,074.
