London-Middlesex reports 23 new COVID-19 cases

Public health officials in London and Middlesex County are reporting another jump in COVID-19 cases.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said there were 23 new infections confirmed on Thursday. That is up from 14 on Wednesday and marks the seventh straight day of double-digit increases. There have now been 105 new cases of the virus recorded in the city and county since Sunday.

The region has had a total of 1,313 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Outbreaks continue on two units at University Hospital. Both the fourth-floor general medicine unit and the ninth floor orthopaedic unit have been closed to new admissions and visitors as a result. Staff on the units aren't allowed to work in other areas of the hospital until the outbreak is declared over. There is also an ongoing outbreak at Henley Place LTC Residence.

The Thames Valley District school board and London District Catholic school board have not identified any new COVID-19 cases within their schools since Tuesday.

Seven more people have recovered from the virus over the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 1,106. Currently, there are 144 known active cases in the region, the highest number to date.

The death toll is unchanged at 63 with no additional COVID-19 linked deaths reported since last Saturday.

In Elgin and Oxford, 10 more cases were logged Thursday. That is a slight decrease from the 15 recorded a day earlier. Southwestern Public Health said the total number of cases within the two counties it serves is 411. Resolved cases in the region went up by one to 358. The death toll has been unchanged since July with five deaths total. Active cases in the area stand at 48.

Ontario recorded another record surge of new infections.

Public health officials logged 1,575 new cases on Thursday. This is the third straight day the province has set a new record high for daily cases. Ontario now has a seven-day new case average of 1,299.

Toronto saw the highest number of new infections Thursday with 472. Peel was close behind with 448, while York had 155 and Ottawa had 91.

Ontario's total number of cases since January is now 89,784.

Eighteen deaths were reported Thursday, increasing the death toll in Ontario to 3,293

There were 917 more recoveries across the province to bring the number of resolved cases to 75,220.

There are currently 431 COVID-19 infected patients in hospitals across the province, including 98 in intensive care and 62 relying on ventilators to breathe.

In the last 24 hour period, the number of COVID-19 tests processed was up to nearly 39,600. The positivity rate in Ontario is now four per cent.
