Charges laid after armed man approaches police

A London man faces several charges after police say he approached an officer while armed with a knife.

According to the London Police Service, a sergeant in full uniform was sitting in an unmarked cruiser in the area of Redan Street and Hamilton Road when a man approached with a knife in his hand. The man told the officer to leave the area, but when the officer got out of the cruiser, the man ran away.

"A foot pursuit ensued, and the suspect climbed a set of stairs onto the roof of a nearby building," police said in a news release issued Monday. "The suspect attempted to climb down from the roof, and was arrested by police."

A search of the man turned up financial documents belonging to another person, six grams of suspected fentanyl, and seven grams of crystal methamphetamine.

A 32-year-old man is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, breach of probation, possession of stolen property, and two counts of possession of a Schedule 1 substance.
