Humane Society seeks donations to feed nearly 300 animals in its care

Two weeks after nearly 100 cats were surrendered to the Humane Society London and Middlesex (HSLM), the agency is turning to the public for help feeding the animals in its care.

The Humane Society's pet food supply has been significantly depleted since 88 felines arrived at the Clarke Road shelter last month. The cats had been surrendered by a single owner and increased the agency's pet population to nearly 300.

On average, HSLM typically shelters and cares for 215 animals on a daily basis. As a result of the extra pets in its care, the humane society is appealing to animal lovers for financial donations that can be used to buy food.

"Our priority is to ensure that we provide every animal with the best care possible; this includes their nutritional requirements,” HSLM Executive Director Steve Ryall said in a statement on Wednesday. “We continue to accept pet surrenders during this time and need to ensure that we have a sufficient inventory of pet food to meet the needs of nearly 300 pets on a daily basis.”

The agency said financial assistance is better than donations of bags or cans of pet food as many of the animals in its care are on veterinary prescribed or specialty diets.

"Providing balanced nutrition that suits the need of each animal offers comfort, health, and consistency. This reduces vet visits for upset stomachs and improves their overall health as they prepare to transition to their new home." the humane society said.

Cash donations can be made through the agency's website www.hslm.ca. Pet food donations can also be purchases through the HSLM Amazon.ca wish list by clicking here. They can also be dropped off at the shelter administration entrance Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The humane society is a non-profit organization which operates without government funding.
