Impaired driving charges laid following fatal crash on Highbury Ave

A 23-year-old faces impaired driving charges following a fatal car crash on Highbury Avenue South on Friday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Highbury Avenue at Glanworth Drive shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday to investigate a serious two-vehicle collision.

A 35-year-old St. Thomas woman died as a result of the collision, and a 23-year-old St. Thomas man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Highbury Avenue, from Manning Drive to Glanworth Drive was closed for several hours while members of the Traffic Management Unit investigated.

Following the incident, the 23-year-old was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a vehicle causing death, and impaired operation of a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 plus.

The names of the drivers involved have not been released to protect and respect the identity of the family of the deceased.

The accused remains in custody pending a future court date.
