A measure aimed at helping downtown London and Old East Village businesses left struggling due to COVID-19 has been extended until the end of the year.
The City of London announced it will continue to allow drivers to park for free for up to two-hours until December 31. All vehicles will continue to be eligible for the program at municipal on-street parking meters and lots in London’s core, which includes the downtown and Old East Village.
Motorists who wish to take advantage of the free parking will need to download the HonkMobile app and enter the promotional code “B2B20”. Since the program began in July, free parking has been accessed more than 7,100 times.
Last week, local businesses warned without more customer support many could end up closing their doors forever as they deal with a lack of clientele because of coronavirus fears.
“The businesses in London’s core have shown great responsibility in following all health precautions to keep customers safe and make them feel a sense of comfort as they shop,” said Mayor Ed Holder. “Shopping local is an important way to show your support for the businesses and for our economy. Free parking makes it even easier to do that.”
The parking initiative by the city’s Back to Business action team is being funded through the City of London’s Core Area Action Plan.
