Eight new COVID-19 cases in London-area as Ontario hits record 700 infections

The London region is starting the week with more than half a dozen new cases of COVID-19.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported on Monday eight more people have tested positive for the virus. The new cases are a slight drop from the 11 infections recorded on Sunday. There has now been a total of 864 COVID-19 cases in the city and county since the start of the pandemic.

Nine more previously diagnosed locals have now recovered from the virus, bringing the total resolved cases to 713. There has not been a death in the London area since June 12. That leaves the death toll at 57.

Outbreaks continue at four long-term care and retirement facilities - Meadow Park Care Centre, Peoplecare Oak Crossing, Ashwood Manor Retirement Home, and Country Terrace.

Both the Carling Heights and Oakridge COVID-19 assessment centres had reached their testing capacity by 11:30 a.m. Western University announced Monday it has moved its assessment centre from a trailer to inside of the Western Student Recreation Centre.

Currently, there are 94 active cases in the region.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit over Elgin and Oxford counties, reported one new COVID-19 case on Monday. That brings their case count up to 265 with 254 recoveries and five deaths. Six cases remain active - four in Oxford County and two in St. Thomas.

It was also confirmed Monday, a possible case at Woodingford Lodge in Woodstock was a false positive. An employee at the facility had tested positive late last week. However, a secondary test showed the worker had not contracted the virus. Precautionary safety measures and isolation of close contacts of the employee at the home have been lifted.

Ontario has set a new record for the highest number of COVID-19 cases reported in the province in a single day.

Public health officials confirmed 700 new infections over the past 24 hours, breaking the previous high of 624 cases recorded on April 24.

However, significantly more people are being tested for the virus across the province than were five months ago. More than 41,100 COVID-19 tests were processed over the last 24-hour period, compared to just 12,295 back in April.

Many of the new cases reported Monday were in Toronto were 344 people tested positive, 104 were in Peel, 89 in Ottawa, and 56 in York.

All other health units reported 20 or fewer new cases.

Ontario's total number of cases has risen above 50,000 to 50,531.

There was one additional death linked to the virus in the province. That brings the death toll to 2,840.

The number of infected Ontarians in hospital sits at 128. Of those, 29 are in the intensive care unit and 17 are relying on ventilators to breathe.

Recoveries across the province are up to 43,127.
