A London man faces a list of charges after a collision on Highway 401 led to a chase that ended with the use of a taser.
According to the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police, officers were called to the westbound lanes of the highway at Veterans Memorial Parkway at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday for reports of a collision. Officers were told that one of the drivers ran from the scene when told that police have been called. They also learned that the man may have been armed with a knife and that one of the vehicles involved, a Mercedes Benz, had been reported stolen to the Niagara Regional Police Service. Police said the vehicle was stolen during an armed robbery at an outlet mall in Niagara on the Lake on September 8.
Police spotted the man running down the shoulder of the eastbound lanes of the 401.
"Officers quickly engaged the suspect at the roadside when he fled leading responding officers through all six lanes of traffic on Highway 401 on foot," police wrote in a news release issued Thursday. "The suspect was observed dropping items from his person as he fled and he failed to follow any directions or commands of the responding officers."
One of the officers used a Conducted Energy Weapon, commonly referred to as a taser, on the man and he was taken into custody.
A 28-year-old London man is charged with possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, resisting a peace officer, failing to comply with a probation order, driving while suspended, and impaired driving.
Police say he also faces charges related to the armed robbery in Niagara on the Lake.
