Three new COVID-19 cases reported in London-Middlesex

The London region has recorded another slight increase of COVID-19 cases.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported another three people have tested positive for the virus on Wednesday. That is up from two new cases on Tuesday. The latest lab confirmed cases bring the area's total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 742.

There were no additional recoveries reported over the past 24 hours, leaving the number of resolved cases at 673.

The death toll stands at 57, with no additional deaths reported since June 12.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, it has been two weeks since any new cases of COVID-19 have been reported. The region's total number of infections is unchanged at 254.

Southwestern Public Health, the two counties' health unit, said there have been no additional recoveries in the area. That leaves the total number of resolved cases at 247. There have been five COVID-19 related deaths in the region since January, with no additional deaths recorded in two months.

Currently, there are just two actives cases of the virus in the two counties.

It was another triple-digit day in Ontario.

Public health officials said there were 149 new infections in the province on Wednesday. That is down from 185 on Tuesday and 190 on Monday. Ontario has not reported fewer than 100 new cases since August 26 when 88 infections were confirmed.

Wednesday's numbers include 50 new cases in Toronto, 41 in Peel, and 16 in Ottawa. Of the province's 34 public health units, 28 are reporting five or fewer new cases. Twenty-one of them have zero new cases.

The total case count now stands at 43,685.

The continued rise in new infections comes a day after Health Minister Christine Elliott announced the province would take a four-week pause on any further reopenings or loosening of public health measures.

"Taking a pause in further re-opening will help avoid broad-scale closures and shutdowns. And on the first day of school for many students, we need to do everything we can to limit the spread of COVID-19. The best way to keep our schools safe is to keep our communities safe," Elliott tweeted Tuesday.

No additional deaths were reported Wednesday, leaving the death toll at 2,813.

Recoveries are up since Tuesday, to 39,332.

Fewer COVID-19 tests were conducted over the last 24 hours with just over 17,600 completed. More than 20,000 tests had been done on both Tuesday and Monday.
