Car fire sparked by discarded cigarette

A carelessly discarded cigarette is being blamed for a fire that destroyed a vehicle in St. Thomas.

Emergency crews were called about the vehicle fire on Walnut Street.around 7 a.m. on Friday. When crews arrived the car was engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and no one was hurt.

The fire was initially deemed suspicious as the inoperable vehicle had been parked in the same location for several months.

However, further investigation determined a lit cigarette had been accidentally flicked through an open window of the vehicle causing the blaze.

While no damage estimate has been provided, St. Thomas police indicated the loss was minimal.
