City sets timeline for arena, community centre re-openings

It won't be long before Londoners can lace up their skates and get on the ice.

The City of London released a timeline for the reopening of arenas and community centres on Thursday. It says there will be a gradual re-opening of arenas, beginning September 28. The re-opening will allow groups to rent ice for hockey, ringette, figure skating, and other activities. However, renters will be expected to follow all guidelines aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19.

"Arena and community centre openings and programs have been modified to comply with public health guidelines and Provincial restrictions, including physical distancing, group size restrictions and staggered start times," it said. Masks will have to be worn at all indoor public spaces, but can be removed while swimming or exercising.

It's expected public skating and learn-to-skate lessons will resume in late October.

The City also announced that community centres will start opening in October.

" Londoners of all ages can expect to see many of their favourite recreation programs offered this fall, including fitness classes, sports programs and art classes," the City said in a news release issued Thursday. "Programs and details will be advertised bi-weekly through london.ca/playyourway and the City’s Facebook and Twitter starting Monday, September 21. Participants can register for these programs one week in advance of a program."

Aquatics program schedules will be posted on the city's website on Friday. Registration will begin Wednesday, September 2 at 8:30 a.m.

In its announcement on Thursday, the City pointed out that private indoor rentals at recreation facilities will not be accepted during September and October. Regarding special events, it said only walks and runs will be allowed beginning September 19. This will keep the city in compliance with the 100 person limit for outdoor public gatherings.
